From Russia with love... kind of. It’s not quite James Bond, but the arrest of 11 alleged Russian spies has the American media fascinated with all things espionage.

We’re analyzing the spy novel-like narrative from Comedy Central, CNN, MSNBC and the Economist.

It’s a story almost too crazy to be true. A group of middle class suburban Americans, actually undercover Russian agents feeding information back to Moscow. Comedy Central’s very own Stephen Colbert plays up the narrative.

“So FBI obviously you must start profiling white suburban middle class parents. Basically the only people you’re not already profiling. These spies… These spies were deep undercover on a mission from Moscow to develop ties in policy-making circles. Apparently they wanted to know our government's policies, but C-Span was too boring.”

CNN talks to the former CIA officer about how the spies desire to blend in may have been their ultimate undoing.

REPORTER: “Of the alleged spies making a decent case though by saying, we’re trying to blend in here. Doing as Americans do buying houses.”

TYLER DRUMHELLER: “Well I’m sure in their mind they were. But in fact, this is one of those cases where convenience trumps security. Because it’s an easy case to make, ‘well everyone else is doing it so I should be doing it.’ But really the only way to guarantee that you’re not going to be noticed, is not to be noticed. The minute you do something businesslike or you get into a big business transaction, you have due diligence, you have background checks, you have credit checks and all that.”

MSNBC highlights how counter-intelligence by U.S. agencies helped lead to the arrest of at least two of the known spies.

Показать перевод

“There were cases where undercover FBI agents met these people like Anna Chapman, gave her bogus passports to deliver to someone else and she was going to do that then having a conversation with her spy-to-spy allegedly. Another person was instructed to make a drop of money in Washington, and he did it, and that's where they found him... they arrested him.”

The Economist takes a more satirical look at the situation, saying for being spies, they weren’t really doing a good job.

Показать перевод

“The story has everything to turn it into a low-budget spy movie. But it has even more to turn it into a slapstick parody of one: spies who fail to dig up any secrets but post their photos on Facebook and who argue with their masters about the ownership of their safe house.”

So what do you think? Has the Cold War narrative just gotten hot?
