"Twilight" star Kristen Stewart has apologized for comments she made in the July issue of British Elle. The actress compared being followed by paparazzi to rape, and her word choice has caused an uproar.
Stewart became a worldwide celebrity virtually overnight for playing Bella in the popular Twilight movies, the next of which comes out June 30. Many organizations spoke out against Stewart for her comments. The Rape and Incest National Network said her comments were “regrettable,” especially since Stewart played a rape victim in the 2004 movie "Speak". Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton called Stewart an “idiot.”
“…you seriously need to shut up. … We're sure victims of sexual abuse will truly love to hear about how you think some minor downsides and headaches in your multi-million dollar lifestyle is somehow comparable to what they've gone through! If you don't like the biz, then leave.”
On HLN, Joy Behar examined the paparazzi culture as a whole. A paparazzo says celebrities secretly love the attention.
GALELLA: “Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. They’re bombarded every day and night — and they love it."
BEHAR: “You think they love it?”
GALELLA: “Oh yes. That’s why they do it. They dress sexy and they prance in front of the cameras.”
But TeensPress.com says the 24-hour attention can be psychologically damaging.
“…having your business available for all to see can be a terrifying experience for someone as young and private as Stewart.”
Cinematical.com points out that this is a problem with society as a whole.
“This is not a problem solely resting on Kristen Stewart's shoulders, but on a culture that uses the word [rape] to describe any annoying or dangerous invasion, regardless of the severity.”
Stewart has now issued an apology. She tells People Magazine:
“I'm really sorry about my choice of words. … 'Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought.”
