Jude Law Discovers Holmes

Jude Law didn't know anything[1] about Sherlock Holmes.

Jude Law has confessed he hadn't read any[1] 'Sherlock Holmes' novels before agreeing to play the fictional detective's sidekick Dr. Watson in the new film.

He said: "Yes, I'm English, but I never[2] really read the 'Sherlock' books as a boy. This was a new literary discovery for me, but a great one because as an adult I was able to[3] sit down and love the source material. Believe me when I say it's a good thing to grab a mug of tea and curl up with a great 'Sherlock Holmes' book."

As well as being impressed with the books, Jude was also blown away by how the film's director Guy Ritchie and the production team were able to[3] recreate 19th Century England.

The 37-year-old star said: "The production designers did an amazing job embellishing historic England. The details were exquisite. I really felt as I had taken a time travel back into history."

Jude stars in the action blockbuster alongside Robert Downey Jr. – who plays the titular detective.

      Jude Law didn't know anything about Sherlock Holmes.

В английском предложении не может быть двойного отрицания, поэтому, когда сказуемое стоит в отрицательной форме, отрицательные слова  no, no one, nobody, nothing, nowhere заменяются на any, anyone, anybody, anything, anywhere.

Однако такую замену можно не производить, а употребить сказуемое в утвердительной форме и одно из отрицательных слов. Поэтому многие английские отрицательные предложения можно выразить двумя способами:

Я ничего не знаю. – I don’t know anything. / I know nothing.

Я никого не видел. – I didn’t see anybody. / I saw nobody.

В русском предложении может быть даже три отрицания, но при переводе его на английский язык, в предложении останется только одно отрицательное слово:

Я ничего никому не скажу. – I won’t tell anything to anybody.

К отрицательным словам также относится «never».

I have never been to London. – Я никогда не бывал в Лондоне.

2. «Never» может использоваться для усиления.
