Britons drink 5,800 pints in a lifetime and suffer 726 hangovers

Thirsty Britons consume more than 5,800 pints and 8,700 glasses of wine during their lifetime, new research has shown.

All this drinking means that the average person has 726 of their mornings - almost two whole years of their life - ruined by a hangover, at a cost of a whopping £58,201.

The study, conducted by Benenden Healthcare Society, also shows the worrying level to which Brits have become dependent on alcohol.

Four of every ten people polled by the organisation say they can go no longer than a week without booze, while ten per cent don't think they can even go two days without a tipple.

However, only 17 per cent of people say they regularly visit the pub, with 57 per cent doing most of their boozing at home.

Andrew Meredith, medical director at Benenden Hospital, says that it is clear that Brits have developed a 'dysfunctional' relationship with alcohol.

Benenden's Lawrence Christensen added: 'We wish to draw attention to these levels of alcohol consumption, which not only pose a medical risk but a lifestyle risk in terms of financial cost.'

British charity Alcohol Concern recently called for drinks manufacturers to be barred from advertising on sites like Twitter and Facebook.

The group feels that marketing on social networks is exposing children to alcohol promotion.
