Geordie Accent 'Sexiest in Britain'

The Geordie accent has been voted the sexiest in the UK thanks to celebrities such as Cheryl Cole.

Research on different ways of speaking in British cities found Newcastle was the most appealing, followed by Edinburgh and then Belfast.

The least attractive accent was Birmingham, followed by Wolverhampton and Bradford.

Cole, a pop singer, was concerned that her attempts to break the US would be held back because Americans would not be able to understand her ''weird accent''.

Last month she told Radio One presenter Fearne Cotton that while she would enjoy presenting the US X Factor: ''They don't know me out there and I've got this weird accent and they'd be a bit like, 'what?'''

But a poll of 5,000 people for Travelodge found that her way of speaking was the sexiest in the UK.

The top ten cities from one to ten were: Newcastle, Edinburgh, Belfast, London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, York and Oxford.

Spokeswoman for the budget hotel chain Shakila Ahmed said: ''No doubt the nation's sweetheart Cheryl Cole has certainly helped to place the jolly Geordie accent as top of the UK's regional accents listing as we cannot get enough of her.''

The rest of the top ten least appealing ways of speaking were Wakefield, Coventry, Cambridge, Hull, Sheffield, Swansea and Plymouth.
